5 items you need for your new obsession with Old Fashioneds

Almost two years ago a friend made me an "Old Fashioned" I had never had such a drink, and honestly the name out me off a bit. Two sips in and I was hooked. That smooth velvety vanilla combined with 100+ proof barrel aged goodness told me "yes, I am a bourbon man." The next time I was over I made my friend show me how to make my own. Since then, I've been through a number of bottles and brands. While I have my favorites, I love the complexity and variety. When it comes to bourbon and it's most famous cocktail, I found that while the bourbon is important so are the other details. If you have fallen in love with the Old Fashioned, here are a few items you'll want to order right away. Doing so will impress your friends, improve your drinks, and way up your bourbon game.

Proper Glassware.
It's true you can technically put your drink into any glass you have, but using an actual Old Fashioned Glass will enhance the entire experience. The larger mouth gets your nose in the glass so that you can enjoy the subtle aromas. The wider glass also gives you something to grab onto. Finally, have an official glass tells everyone that this is a special and important drink.



Jigger.
You're going to want to experiment with the amount of the golden liquid you use. A jigger aides the process very much. I got a copper one mainly because it looks really nice.



The Right Ice Tray.
Yeah, any ice will do but a BIG ice cube melts slower and looks better too. After trying the big spherical whiskey ice balls, I actually prefer this silicone cube tray. One cube still fits in the glass and leaves plenty of room for the liquids to mingle. The obvious advantage is that you have six cubes for six drinks.



Muddler.
When I first started making Old Fashioneds I did not have a muddler. I used the handle end of a wooden spoon. That worked ok but man was I happy to use the real thing. This particular muddler comes with a fancy stir spoon/fork thing. It comes in handy!



Demerara Sugar Cubes.
In every single grocery store I went to I could only find one kind of sugar cubes. White, refined sugar. While adequate, it didn't add anything but sweetness. I read about demerara and really wanted to try it. I was glad I ordered it on Amazon. One box lasts a LONG time too!
